Behind the first-person stories

The man behind the muddy notebook

Tavi Rook in the illustrated story world

Tavi Rook

I used to carry a notebook full of measurements. Now it is mostly crooked maps, coffee rings and descriptions of fish that were absolutely larger before I reached the dock. Sunreef is my imaginary corner of the Big Bass Bonanza adventure: bright water, stubborn bass and a boat called Maybe Tomorrow. I tell these trips from inside that world, one small disaster at a time.

My first boat had a cracked seat and a bell that rang whenever I leaned left. I thought the bell would frighten every fish in the lagoon. Instead, it became the beginning of the best evening I had ever spent on the water. That is how this journal works: I follow the detail that should have ruined the trip. Sometimes it leads to a fish. Sometimes it leads to a much better lunch.

Saltline Stories: a character’s point of view

An independent, illustrated fishing tale inspired by Big Bass Bonanza. Tavi, Sunreef and his adventures are invented; this journal is not an official game service.

Sunreef is drawn with the colour and energy of a fishing game, while the words stay close to Tavi’s small observations. A bell, a misplaced hat and a cold supper receive as much attention as the fish. The journal offers stories to read; it has no playable casino or purchase flow.

The line that explains the narrator

“The fish took my best lure. I got a better story.”
